House Deputy Minority Leader Zambales Rep. Milagros “Mitos”
Magsaysay said President Aquino must have signed the Cybercrime Law with ‘eyes
wide open.’
Magsaysay said President Aquino could have vetoed the
controversial provisions on online libel and the take down clause in the
Cybercrime Law “if they were not to his liking.”
“All past Presidents exercised this, if they disagreed on the law
Congress is trying to pass.”
“If there were issues not to his liking, he would have made it
known to Congress prior to his signing so that it could have been deliberated
further in the bicam,” Magsaysay said.
Magsaysay also said it is unfair to lay all the blame on the
contentious provisions of the Cybercrime Law on a single legislator.
Magsaysay recalled that the libel and other questionable
provisions of the Cybercrime Law were not part of the version approved by the
House of Representatives.
“When we passed the House version wala pa yun… attendees to the
bicameral committee never informed us na nagka-changes sa version namin,”
Magsaysay said.
Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo Angara had earlier said in a recent
interview that as one of the authors of the Cybercrime Law, he could not
remember the questionable provisions during their deliberations. ###
