Lenie Robredo, widow of the late DILG Sec. Jesse
Robredo, is not interested in running for senator in next year’s elections.
Lenie relayed her decision to House Speaker
Feliciano Belmonte, who then informed media. There had been reports that the
Liberal Party (LP) that the LP was talking to Lenie about being their 12th senatorial
candidate.
The LP-Nacionalista Party (NP)-Nationalist
People’s Coalition (NPC) alliance has only 11 candidates, after Customs Commissioner
Ruffy Biazon decided not to join the senatorial race.
House Deputy Speaker Erin Tanada, who had
publicly expressed his intention to run for senator, has been nixed by the
allainace.
Belmonte explained that the LP did not include
Tañada in its senatorial line up because of his poor ratings in recent surveys.
Belmonte said that while he personally supports
and wants Tañada as an LP senatorial candidate, the party is putting much
weight on the ratings. ###
