Hospital patients evacuated during the Batangas earthquake |
April 09, 2017
The four earthquakes that rocked Batangas and various
areas yesterday should be a reminder for all of us to start checking out HOW
SAFE and HOW READY we are once disaster strikes. Especially considering the
fact that the dreaded ‘Big One’ killer quake can come anytime. So take this
blog as my personal appeal to all of you:
Start finding out how prepared are your
communities, or towns and cities and even provinces. Talk to your congressmen, governors,
mayors, town or city or barangay councils and local disaster officials. Ask
anything you want --- Will there be ENOUGH doctors/nurses and medical personnel,
as well as food and medical supplies and search and rescue equipment and
logistics; Have evacuation centers, temporary shelters and even escape routes already
been identified an do the residents know where arfe these; Are there sufficient
disaster relief funds and are the monies all accounted for.
Don’t forget to find out what, if any, are the
condemned properties in your area, as well as danger zones or spots which you
must avoid in case of evacuation. You must also be informed of what problems,
if any, remain unsolved which blocks maximum disaster preparedness and what has
been done, or is being done, about it.
Lastly, request for disaster preparedness
seminars from your congressmen or local government officials. Related to this,
it would help if you guys get together and share whatever knowledge or
information you know or have with each other.
Don’t rely entirely on the national
government, people. If disaster strikes, the ones who can best help us, immediately,
are OURSELVES. 30
