CONGRESS SHOULD INVESTIGATE MERALCO, ASAP!

Both houses of Congress – the Senate and the House of Representatives—should investigate Meralco AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (ASAP) for the HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS AND ENORMOUS CHARGES they impose on us helpless consumers.

I received my Meralco bill hours ago, for P2,700.05. Shocked since I live alone iand use power MAINLY, AND ONLY ALMOST DAILY, for my computer and lights for my writings, I checked on the breakdown of the charges.

Meralco’s other charges was MORE THAN MY ACTUAL CONSUMPTION. Of my P2,700.05 bill, only P1,328.42 or 49.20 percent was for the power generated or which I had actually used. The balance, P1,371.63, was for their distribution charge, system loss and other  charges. The distribution charge alone was 610.47, or almost 50 percent of my actual consumption.  The system loss was P231.17.

So first: HOW REASONABLE and JUSTIFIABLE are these other charges Meralco is collecting from us? What is the basis or how do they compute these? Are these charges LEGAL? Pardon my ignorance of the power business, people, but personally I find the charges HIGHLY EXCESSIVE AND QUESTIONABLE.

Second: Of the charges they ask HOW MUCH actually goes to Meralco, and to their suppliers/contractors and other expenses? It would be both RIDICULOUS AND IMPOSSIBLE if Meralco will say they don’t have any overprice for their charges. If they will, Meralco had better present documents and other physical proof.

With the BILLIONS they earn monthly, is Meralco DOING ANYTHING to reduce their charges and ease the burden of us consumers? If yes, what? If no, why not?  

We work NOT JUST TO FURTHER ENRICH MERALCO. We work for a DECENT, COMFORTABLE life for ourselves and our loved ones, which WE ALL DESERVE.  Meralco has no moral right to deprive us of that with their electricity. Our senators and congressmen had better realize this, FAST. 30
